Garmin basecamp create route6/7/2023 ![]() I had a Montana 600 (original) which I almost threw out the window of my truck in Colorado when it froze up just as I descended into a fog bank and needed to see my upcoming turn. During a day ride I might need to select a new track 3 or 4 times. If you hit a trail closure you may need to select a new track. When you're following a track and reach the end, you can pick a new track to start following, and it'll usually be the first one on the list since tracks are listed in order of nearest first. But for more flexibility, you can do several short tracks with different alternatives. You can do one long track and follow it the whole time. The length of the tracks is also an issue. The only thing is if you check too late and miss a turn, you could be off the wavy line and have to backtrack to it, or turn on the map to see where you are. Often I'll just turn off the maps and follow the wavy line by itself. I have the 62cs which has such a tiny screen maps are difficult to use at all. But sometimes I'll make a track quickly by creating a route in Basecamp and converting it to a track. I find it easier to use only tracks and follow the wavy line, instead of trying to use routes which are for turn-by-turn navigation. My guess you have to pay to download maps? The my Garmin with the forest maps downloaded is really good, but when I'm leading a group of riders, I'd like to have the ride all planned out beforehand so I'm not sitting there zooming in and out of my Garmin screen trying to remember which way to go at a trail fork. I like to plan things out first and avoid confusion and wasting time out on the trail trying to figure out which way to go. I have the Forest Map downloaded on to my Garmin, but it would be awesome to lay out a route first to follow. ![]() For example, I want to create a route for Forest Hill and download it on to my Garmin so that I can follow it when I get there.
